COMMENTARY | No one should be surprised that the Justices of the Supreme Court are taking the constitutionality of the Affordable Care Act seriously. Yet, The Atlantic Wire conveys a slightly incredulous tone at the notion that parts of the law could be struck down.
Liberal lawyers have long treated anyone who questioned the constitutionality of the individual mandate as if they were part of a vast right-wing conspiracy. Opponents of the Affordable Care Act were scoffed at, belittled, and ridiculed on news shows, comedy shows, and in internet forums.
Then House Speaker Nancy Pelosi embodied the haughty sang-froid attitude of Beltway imperials toward those who were in doubt about the bill's 2,700 pages.
"But we have to pass the bill so that you can find out what is in it," said Pelosi.
The reach of federal power has been at issue since the founding days of the American republic. Our democracy is different from other countries in that power flows from the individual to the state, not the other way around.
