U.S. Should Attack Iran Nuclear Facilities, Not Israel - Yahoo! News

U.S. Should Attack Iran Nuclear Facilities, Not Israel - Yahoo! News

COMMENTARY | I wouldn't be surprised to wake up some morning soon to learn Israel has bombed military targets in Iran. But I'm not sure if "soon" means this week, next month or after the 2012 election.

U.S. Joint Chiefs of Staff Gen. Martin Dempsey recently joined Defense Secretary Panetta in public statements aimed at restraining Israel. I wish the Israelis would wait, too, but for what?

Waiting for Iran to have a nuclear weapon and a means of delivering it would be ultimately more destabilizing for the region than an Israeli or U.S. attack. For America, it's a matter of getting bad news now or horrible news later.

One nuclear bomb could virtually destroy any small country and wreak destruction and havoc on a larger country.

'Anti-Romney' Celebrity Pundits Are Determined to Win by Losing - Yahoo! News

COMMENTARY | Among celebrity pundits, Ann Coulter is a rogue warrior. She supports Mitt Romney and hopes he'll pick New Jersey Governor Chris Christie as his running mate.

Coulter's opinions run counter to those of Rush Limbaugh, Mark Levin, Sean Hannity, or Glen Beck, all of whom have wobbled between Newt Gingrich and Rich Santorum.

Most celebrity pundits don't have to write anything, which means they don't have to think very much, and neither do the people who listen to them. A radio or TV "analysis" is a packaged script where you disparage candidates who stray from the herd.

Mitt Romney stands outside the herd, and he's paying for it.

Gay Bias Trial Continues in New Jersey Suicide of Tyler Clementi - Yahoo! News

Gay Bias Trial Continues in New Jersey Suicide of Tyler Clementi - Yahoo! News

Rutgers student Tyler Clementi jumped to his death from the George Washington Bridge in September 2010. Before committing suicide, Clementi posted a message on his Facebook page: "Jumping off the gw bridge sorry."

Clementi's encounter with an unidentified male had been live-streamed over the Internet. Dharun Ravi, 18 at the time Clementi committed suicide, has been charged with a hate crime for having set up the webcam that streamed the incident.

The trial began Friday and continued today with student witnesses testifying to how they crowded around a computer screen to watch two men kissing.

At what point does such behavior rise to the level of a hate crime?

In crime-ridden neighborhoods, people are often ambivalent about police presence and sometimes regard police as the enemy. But police are often the only people willing to show up when violent crimes occur.

Sometimes the police become the casualties.

In 2011, 65 police officers were killed by gunfire, 12 were killed by vehicle assaults, and two were stabbed to death, according to the Officer Down Memorial Page.

Ramarley Graham
Bronx, N.Y., resident Ramarley Graham, 18, was shot to death Feb. 1, according to a New York Post account, by one of two officers who were trailing him after a marijuana deal.

The New York Daily News reports police officers saw Graham adjusting his waistband and thought he was carrying a gun when they chased him to his apartment bathroom and shot him.

Romney Picks Up Speed, Exuding Confidence - Yahoo! News

Romney Picks Up Speed, Exuding Confidence - Yahoo! News

COMMENTARY | I hadn't quite made up my mind whom I'd support in the GOP 2012 primary and was leaning toward Newt Gingrich when the attacks on Bain Capital started.

It wasn't so much that I'm this great capitalist or anything. It's just that the economy works a certain way, and struggles to be free of government interference.

Moreover, the 1989 collapse of the Soviet Union made it all clear enough. The "dictatorship of the proletariat" was exposed as a hoax.

Newt Gingrich knows that well enough, yet he persisted in his attacks on Bain Capital. Further straining credulity were his awkward attempts at making a distinction between "good venture capitalism" and "bad venture capitalism."

The Obama would like the Iranians to just back off their nuclear weapons development program. But will the Iranians test Obama before the 2012 elections?

Myth of the Great-Hearted Former Slave - Yahoo! News

Myth of the Great-Hearted Former Slave - Yahoo! News

COMMENTARY | Being skeptical of a story is not the same thing as believing it is entirely untrue, as in the following: The Sideshow presents items of peculiar interest. An item purports to be a letter from a former Tennessee slave to his former slave owner.

The newspaper of attribution was the New York Daily Tribune of August 1865. Presumably, the letter and the Flickr image of the Tribune have been verified as accurate, a stated requirement of the Letters of Note website.

A curious problem with authenticity arises, however, if you note the Library of Congress' New York Daily Tribune list of digitized volumes begins in 1875. A minor point, perhaps, but it signals the letter might have had a different origin.

Rep. Allen West and Fox News' Bob Beckel Fail to Communicate - Yahoo! News

Rep. Allen West and Fox News' Bob Beckel Fail to Communicate - Yahoo! News

COMMENTARY | Fox News pundit Bob Beckel has a political problem, and his name is Rep. Allen West of Florida.

Beckel appeared on Fox News this morning angrily protesting West's exhortation that certain members of the Democratic Party should take their "message" and "get the hell out of the United States of America."

That's what happens when you express feelings rather than calculated political statements. In politics, one must leave candor at home.

Beckel had been previously chided on the Fox panel program "The Five" for showing disrespect to the retired Iraq war veteran turned congressman. Beckel stubbornly refused to address West by his military or civilian title as a representative of Florida.
